Killing the Grizzly #1: A Bold New Era

The world has changed.

There are less theatrical ways to put that, but none simpler in declaring this manifest truth: we’ve progressed. Beyond the printed page, though we’ve yet to leave those bastard scions of trees behind; beyond the water-stained warehouses and corner-crumpled cardboard boxes of overfed distribution systems. We feel far stranger today sitting there with a newspaper in hand, unable to double-click on names within the articles.

One of the most frequently-asked questions of professional authors is “Where do you get your ideas?” This really translates into “I want to be an author; where can I get ideas?” That’s a valid question.

One place you can start is: Genre—namely, examining the genres you like. What attracts you to your favorite genres?

In our last visit, I shared with you my favorite social networking sites. This month, as promised, we will discuss the Do’s & Don’ts when participating in these sites. Keep in mind these tricks of the trade are geared toward promoting a product, whether it be comics or not. I encourage you to pay close attention to both the do’s and the don’ts. Both can make or break your promotional campaign.

The Septagon Briefing #3: Career Paths

Found in my local library system:

–Cool Careers Without College for People Who Love Manga, Comics, And Animation (Cool Careers Without College series) (Library Binding)

Just from the title, I was provoked to think about the whole issue. “Is the point of this,” I wondered, “to get kids excited about this stuff before they even graduate from high school, so they can kind of get a head start?” A quick look through the start suggested to me that the answer to that question was “No,” which bothered me, because a “no” response made me feel too much like they were suggesting “Hey, 18-year-olds! Not planning on going to college? Have a look at what Comics, Manga, and Animation have to offer!”

Promotionally Speaking #2: Baby Steps

Welcome to the next phase in our journey into comic book promotions. Today we will talk about those preparation steps creators should take before they embark on a promotional campaign.

There are many artists, writers and creators in the comic book industry. There are hundreds of concepts and ideas out there as well. Novice creators often have the misconception that their story idea is marketable and promote-able for the sheer fact that the art is well-rendered and the story is well-written. In today’s society, those two elements are not enough to help carry a project to stardom. There has to be a hook, something that grabs the reader’s attention from the very beginning. And, it is critical for creators to identify what makes their product unique.

Fourth Panel Estate #3: Secretly a National Park

I can’t normally talk about parallel universes without having to tap my own bile. It’s been something of an inflammatory subject, ever since those bastards from Parallel Earth Nine-and-a-Bit came over and started hiding all my small change. Fortunately the alternate reality presented in “Templar, Arizona” neither wreaks havoc on my oesophagus or penny jar as it is not wholly obsessed with the idea. The execution is somewhat more subtle than goatee’s and swastikas with the creator, Spike Trotman, focussing in on the titular town and all the colourful new cultures that exist within.
